08 Nov OFTY’s The Magic Flute: Student Chorus Origins
The hallmark of an Opera for the Young performance is the carefully crafted involvement of elementary students in our productions. This season the student chorus plays the Alien Council of Wisdom and their wise, three-headed leader, King Sarastro. They perform four songs that highlight the drama of the scene and propel the story forward. Each melody is present in a full-production of Mozart’s opera.
Musical pieces for our student chorus were selected because they conveyed the moment well in our adapted story and were suited to the vocal abilities of children. Each chorus song offers its own musical challenges (appreciated by teachers), and has been given text to suit Opera for the Young’s adaptation. The video above positions Opera for the Young’s melodies next to their origins in the original opera. Special thanks to OFTY’s Flute adapters – Diane Garton Edie and Jeffrey Sykes.
